Carson artist's ornament hangs in White House

Carson City artist Carol Folvary-Anderson is one of four Nevadans to create decorations for the White House Christmas tree in Washington, D.C.

Folvary-Anderson, Jill Atkins of Reno; Steven Liguori of Boulder City and Dolores Nast of Las Vegas responded to first lady Laura Bush's request to create three dimensional white ornaments that are miniature replicas of historic Nevada homes. Mrs. Bush requested this year's decorations illustrate the theme, "At Home for the Holidays," capturing the images of homecomings, family reunions and festive gatherings.

"Especially this Christmas season, when we'll be dealing with our families around the Christmas tree -- all the different traditions and rituals that families have for the holiday season -- are more important than ever," Bush said.

The artists researched different historic Nevada homes and constructed miniature ornaments out of lightweight materials such as balsa wood. Atkins modeled her ornament after the Lake Mansion in Reno; Folvary-Anderson designed a replica of the Governor's Mansion in Carson City; Liguori recreated the Little Church of the West in Las Vegas and Nast created an ornament depicting a cottage built in Goldfield. The home later was moved to Las Vegas and now is located at the Clark County Museum.

The Nevada Arts Council selected the artists who designed the ornaments.
