Voice your opinion on Yucca Mountain today

The Department of Energy is asking people to comment on air.

Today, Carson City residents will have one last opportunity to comment on a plan that has not yet been completed.

No final environmental impact statement has been released for the dump site and radiation standards for the Environmental Protection Agency are being challenged in court.

Regular readers of the Nevada Appeal already know how we feel about placing a nuclear dump in Nevada. We're opposed.

But the opportunity presents itself for every resident in the city to share their opinions with the federal government about the location of a nuclear waste site.

We encourage residents to attend today's meeting, despite the short notice. It is 3-8 p.m. at the Carson Nugget.

More importantly, we encourage residents with strong opinions on the issue to make the trip to Gardnerville on Thursday and again on Oct. 10 or to Yerington on Friday and Oct. 11 or to Virginia City on Oct. 12.

A nuclear dump site at Yucca Mountain is the worst thing that could happen to Nevada's tourist industry.

Fewer people visiting Las Vegas means less money for the state to spend in Carson City.

And that's bad news for all Nevadans.

Are we advocating packing the meetings?

You bet.
