New court marshal hired

June Chrzanowski had never been inside a courtroom until Friday, when she watched her son be sworn in as a peace officer and accept a job as justice court marshal.

"I'm very honored that I have the chance to see him achieve his goal," she said. "It's a dream."

Andrew Chrzanowski, 23, completed his training at Western Nevada State Peace Officer's Academy and is the new marshal for Judge John Tatro.

"It's something different," Chrzanowski said. "You still get to be in law enforcement, but you get to see the other side of it."

He became interested in the field when he served as a law enforcement officer in the U.S. Air Force.

"I enjoyed what I did. I like helping people."

And he comes from a long line of public servants. His grandfather Richard Thornton is a retired Air Force pilot and his father, Richard Chrzanowski, is a battalion chief with the Carson City Fire Department.

His father, mother, grandparents, sisters and girlfriend were in the courtroom to see him be sworn in.

"I was extremely proud to watch him go through the academy," his father said. "He put in a tremendous amount of time over the last six months going to school all day, even on the weekends.

"As a parent, it makes me real happy to see he's applied himself and that he's successful."

Thornton was also pleased to watch his grandson succeed.

"I watched him for quite a while searching for what he would like to do," Thornton said. "Once he made up his mind, he has sacrificed a whole bunch and applied himself a whole lot to get where he is."

Chrzanowski graduated from the POST academy Friday evening after his appointment as court marshal.
