During Saturday's hot temperatures, a root-beer float was right on tap. And more than half a dozen teenagers were making them outside the Albertson's store on North Carson Street.
"(The fund-raiser) is for our eighth grade trip to Washington, D.C., next year," said Candice Rutledge, a 13-year-old from Carson City Middle School, as she scooped out vanilla ice cream donated from Albertson's.
"We're going to learn about the history of our country," said Amanda Reynolds.
The students are excited about going to D.C., and hope to see the White House, Lincoln Memorial, and Ford's Theater, where Lincoln was shot.
The group of kids and chaperones opened up shop just after 11 a.m. They said the morning had been slow, but with the heat of the day, sales looked promising. According to Candice's mom, Karen, the teenagers will hold a second root beer float fund-raiser Aug. 17 until 3 or 4 p.m.
Last week, the group held its first fund-raiser, a carwash, and made $3,000.
They plan to hold several more fund-raisers throughout the year, including a rake clean-up and sales of See's Candies. The cost of each ticket for the five day tour is $1,400.
Bill Schultz, a teacher at Carson Middle School, has been taking groups for close to 20 years.
"(These fund-raisers) are a great way for the kids to learn that if you want to get something done and it's worth working for, you can do it," said Karen Rutledge.
