When John Tatro went to New York in October to offer $5,000 to Sept. 11 victims, he was overwhelmed by what he saw.
"We went to ground zero when it was still smoking," said Tatro, a Carson City justice of the peace. "It was pretty powerful."
Tatro will be the master of ceremonies at a Sept. 11 tribute in Carson City where he plans to speak a little about his experience in New York after the attack.
Tatro, a member of the Carson City Rotary Club, traveled to New York to present a check to the chairman of the Rotary Relief Fund, one of several victim relief funds. The $5,000 was raised in one day by members of the Carson City Rotary Club, Tatro said.
The lunch-time tribute will feature a buffet and the opportunity to listen to several speakers from local organizations talk about problems in Carson City.
Marilyn Lewis, chairwoman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, which is sponsoring the event along with the Soroptimist Club, said the luncheon will not only allow people to remember victims of the attack, but will be a way to inform people how they can help with local crisis, such as homlessness and violence.
"It was a horrible tragedy but we also have some local issues that we all need to be aware of," Lewis said.
