Obituary: Walter Seher

A memorial service and wake for Walter Seher will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Seher residence, 4949 South Edmonds Drive.

Mr. Seher died July 14, 2002, at Washoe Medical Center. He was born Oct. 19, 1917, in Manteca, Calif., to Jacob and Margaret Hohenstien Seher, one of nine children.

He attended schools in Manteca and Stockton, Calif., and lived for a time in Westwood, Calif., where he worked for the Red River Lumber Co.

He was drafted for military service in January 1941 and served with the 908th Ordinance Heavy Automotive Maintenance Company on the Alcan Highway in Canada and later in England, France, Belgium and Germany.

He met and married Jean Parry in England and they moved to California after he returned from Germany. He worked for Pacific Gas and Electric in Sonora, Calif. They moved to Sparks and then Carson City, where they operated the Plaza Motel. They retired in Carson City.

In Sparks, he was active in Little League and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the reunion committee for his military unit.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jean in October 2000.

Among his survivors are his sons John of Washoe Valley and Richard of Reno and grandchildren Whitney and Robert, both of Las Vegas.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Walter Seher Western Book Fund at the Carson City Library.
