Farmers Market opens Wednesday

From peaches to cherries, corn to potatoes, summer at the Pony Express Pavilion promises to be a haven for fresh produce.

The 9th annual Carson City Farmers Market opens Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It's the market's fourth season at the Pony Express Pavilion.

Right there with the fresh, in-season fruits and vegetables will be the people who grew them -- something you won't find in a grocery store aisle. This year, the market will feature more jams, sauces, herbs and restaurant foods than in past years.

Also during the market's first day, representatives from the attorney general's missing children's clearinghouse will be offering child safety kits to parents. Stephanie Parker, crime prevention coordinator, said she hopes to give to any parent willing to take one a kit that includes fingerprints and Polaroid pictures of a child in a packet with room for other essential paperwork to give to police in the event of an abduction. Parker said targeting Carson City with the information comes in response to two attempted abductions near Seeliger Elementary School in May.
