Job fair on Saturday attracts 36 employers

More than 3,000 job seekers and 36 employers are expected to attend the Tahoe-Carson Area Newspapers 2002 Job Fair on Saturday at the Carson City Community Center.

Janet Geary, classified manager for the newspaper group including the Nevada Appeal, said although local hiring has slowed with the economic downturn and the effects of Sept. 11, things are starting to turn around.

"We're really focused on medical employers this year," she said. "Tahoe-Carson Hospital, Select Specialty Hospital and Mountain View Care Center are a few of the employers that will be there.

"There is a real need for nurses. We sent out invitations to WNCC, UNR and TMCC nursing students."

She said the hiring blitz should come as good news to the 180 nursing students expected to graduate from local schools this year.

Wal-Mart is also on a hiring spree to fill approximately 300 open positions at the new Super Wal-Mart, which opens this year at the north end of Douglas County.

"We get a lot of people hired right on the spot," Geary said. This is the newspapers' third local job fair. "People should bring plenty of applications, and we will have tables where people can sit down to fill out applications."

Other employers at the fair include: AFLAC, Accountants Inc., Eagle Valley Children's Home, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe, Pi-on Plaza, Snap-On Tools, Starbucks, Washoe Health Systems, and several Nevada and California government agencies.

Inserted inside today's newspaper is the Recruiter, T-CAN's guide to the job fair. It includes information about hiring companies and tips for job seekers. The publication was widely distributed in anticipation of the fair.

The newspaper consortium, which includes six Northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe newspapers, also puts on a job fair in the fall in South Lake Tahoe.
