120 YEARS AGO

The Chief Signal Officer of the United States is collecting popular weather proverbs and prognostics used among all classes. He sends us one to be filled out, ranging from 14 areas and actions of animals, then days of the week. The U.S. government of late has acquired the habit of employing the newspapers to do gratuitous work for it. The editors do all the work and the government gets all the credit. All this business is beginning to pall on us.

100 YEARS AGO

Patrons of the Opera House this evening will witness one of the best staged and produced plays, "Hearts of Oak" and "Shore Acres" which require a special rail car to transport the scenery.

70 YEARS AGO

Homer Mooney will have a major paper at Leisure Hour, "Western Explorer." Dr. Burnett will render a couple of solos and French and English songs will be given by Miss Reilly.

50 YEARS AGO

Ladies in period dress are urged by Nevada Day Chairman John Doherty to sign up for a Nevada Day promotion tour in Reno. They will meet most of Reno notables as well as visiting most of the casinos.

20 YEARS AGO

Carson City real estate business owner Pete Rice will be reliving his days as a helicopter pilot for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson at the Carson City Chamber luncheon.

10 YEARS AGO

An 18-year 4-H leader has been named this year's outstanding leader in the Carson City/Storey County area. She is Marlene Fulper who founded the Arrowhead Lamb and Goat clubs in 1974. She also has a veterinary science club.

Bill Dolan, a Carson City resident, has been writing this column for the Nevada Appeal since 1947.
