GARDNERVILLE -- Two people were injured Wednesday afternoon when a car rolled through a stop sign into the path of a woman driving a pickup truck on Highway 88 at Centerville.
The Nevada Highway Patrol said a man and a young girl, the driver and his passenger in the car, were taken by Care Flight to Washoe Medical Center in Reno.
Driver Robert Manuel Gonzalez, 54, of Gardnerville was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital. Samantha Gonzalez, 9, however, was in critical condition at Washoe Medical Center, according to the NHP.
The driver of the pickup, Joanne Zuvich, 41, of Minden, said she was traveling southbound on Highway 88 at about 5 p.m. when she saw the car come to a rolling stop at Centerville, then cross Highway 88 in her path.
"I saw it from way back, " Zuvich said. "I slammed on my brakes as hard as I could."
Zuvich said she was driving the 55-mph speed limit or slower. Her pickup hit the right front passenger side of the car. Zuvich said she bruised her knee and was shaken up by the accident.
Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Todd Hartlane said he did not suspect alcohol was involved. The accident is under investigation. No charges had been filed, but Hartlane said the driver of the car might be charged with failure to yield.
All three people involved were wearing safety belts, the NHP added.
