Suspect captured after standoff with Reno SWAT team

SUN VALLEY, Nev. (AP) -- A 10-hour standoff with a SWAT team just north of Reno ended Wednesday evening with the capture of the 50-year-old suspect after police fired tear gas into his trailer.

The sexual assault suspect holed up in a camper trailer next to a home in Sun Valley about 2 a.m. Wednesday, Washoe County sheriff's deputies said.

Officers fired eight to 10 shots of tear gas into the trailer shortly after 5 p.m. and then brought him out on a stretcher, KRNV-TV reported.

Deputies said he suffered minor injuries to his head and was being transported to Washoe Medical Center, KTVN-TV reported. His name was not released and there was no immediate report on his condition.

Washoe County sheriff's deputies closed off residential streets around the area early Wednesday and a SWAT team and hostage negotiators were called to the scene near Fifth and Yukon about 9 a.m.

Police snipers spent much of the day positioned on the rooftops of neighboring homes.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Michelle Youngs said the incident began with the report of a sexual assault. The suspect barricaded himself inside when deputies showed up to investigate, she said.

KTVN reported the alleged sexual assault victim was a 15-year-old girl. Police negotiators had telephone conversations with the suspect off and on before he cut off communication about 3 p.m.
