Surprising its author, a bill exempting Nevada from daylight savings time won approval Thursday in the Assembly Committee on Elections, Procedures and Ethics.
AB422, approved on a split voice vote, now moves to the full Assembly.
Assemblyman Bob Beers, R-Las Vegas, offered the plan -- and said that he didn't expect it to pass.
Beers said the federal government wanted to save energy on heating costs when establishing daylight savings -- but because so many Nevadans use energy to cool their homes, it makes more sense to have less sunlight in the afternoon and evening.
Beers also said he just has a hard time adjusting to the time change.
Committee members also discussed how the state could shift to the Mountain time zone, and decided they'd consider a resolution encouraging Congress to let Nevada make the move.
