Drop off extra turkeys for FISH

A Carson City charity is asking for extra turkeys this season to help fill Christmas baskets for those less fortunate.

Friends in Service Helping needs about 600 turkeys to make enough baskets for area families, said Director Monte Fast. The organization will hold a "turkey drop" Wednesday at the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, 1511 N. Carson St., to collect birds from the public in the afternoon.

The charity handed out 430 turkey baskets at Thanksgiving, a 35 percent increase over last year, Fast said.

The baskets help individuals and families in the area with extra food for the holiday dinner.

"This is the extra thing that will make their Christmas joyful," Fast said. "We're glad to do it."

The organization continues to serve low-income Lyon County residents with food. Fast estimates the charitable organization will deliver at least 150 baskets in the Dayton area for Christmas this year.

Fast suggests people donate any size turkey they can afford. A 10- to 12- pound turkey would be a "feast" for some Carson families.

Turkeys also can be dropped off anytime between today and Dec. 22 at FISH, 138 E. Long St.
