Mildred Elizabeth Elsey Swan

A celebration of life will be held for Mildred Elizabeth Elsey Swan at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Reno First Church of the Nazarene, 740 Del Monte Lane in Reno.

Visitation will be Monday, Dec. 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Walton's Funeral Home, 875 West Second St. in Reno.

Mrs. Swan died on Dec. 12, 2003, at her home in Reno. She was 94.

She was born on Aug. 31, 1909, to Laken Daniel and Jessie Long Elsey of Bellview, W.Va.

She graduated from high school in Aurora, W.Va., going on to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. She worked as a public school nurse in Preston and Marion Counties in W.Va., and a nurse in Morgantown, W.Va., Portland, Ore., Washoe General and St. Mary's Hospital in Reno.

She married Emmet Vernon Swan in Virginia City in 1936.

Mrs. Swan served as treasurer of the Reno Nazarene church for several years. She was a member of the Registered Nurses Association of Nevada and the Women's Auxiliary of Gideon's, Reno Camp and assisted in placing Gideon Bibles with nurses, hospitals and correctional institutions in Nevada. She was a Christian.

She was preceded in death by her sister Lucy; brothers Fred, Clifford and Charles Nicholas; and three step children.

Among her survivor are: Ona L. Stopyra of Philadelphia, Penn.; her husband of East Haven, Conn.; Euphia O. Blinn of Carson City; Victor F. Baird of Reno; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Walton's Funeral Home in Reno is in charge of arrangements.
