Still time to mail holiday packages

The parking lot was full, and customers lined up at Carson City's Roop Street post office Monday, which is traditionally the busiest mailing day of the year, according to Postmaster Michael Benson.

He said the hours at the U.S. Postal Service have been temporarily extended to accommodate the Christmas rush.

"We're open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and we've extended our hours about a half hour during the week, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through next Monday," he said.

If those Christmas cards aren't mailed and that package to Uncle Jack is still sitting in the living room, take heart.

Benson said anything sent by the end of the week has a very good chance of making its destination by Christmas. But next week, customers might want to consider priority or express mail.

The Ormsby Station at 2613 Empire Ranch Road is maintaining its regular hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

"Things have been pretty busy so far, but they'll probably slow down right after this week," said Rick Nordstrom, post office supervisor.

Postmaster Debbie Parrish said the Minden post office will also be open extra hours on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
