STATELINE - In the 30 years that Barbara Reed has worked for Douglas County, she's seen its population explode. But never for a minute did she think there was too much work to handle.
"I love my job," said Reed, who has been the county clerk-treasurer since 1986. "I don't know where the 30 years went. There have been so many changes. Sometimes I think about it, and it's just overwhelming."
The Douglas County Board of Commissioners recently recognized Reed for her lengthy tenure. Reed, 56, is eligible for retirement, but has no plans to quit any time soon.
During her tenure with the county, the number of commissioners has increased from three to five; the number of registered voters has gone from 5,000 to 20,000; and the number of tax bills that are sent out has risen from 5,600 to about 23,000.
Reed has been elected clerk-treasurer five times. She manages 28 employees and four offices.
At the start of the meeting, Commissioner Bernie Curtis read a proclamation honoring Reed. It stated, in part: "Barbara was instrumental in changing state law to allow marriage licenses to be sold at Lake Tahoe, not just in the county seat in Minden, for the past 20 years."
Commissioners also noted that Reed is the most senior clerk-treasurer in the state. Commissioner Curtis ended the short ceremony with "You started when you we're 12, right?"
