Obituary: Mary Cecelia Hataway

Mary Cecelia Hataway, 93, a former Dayton resident, died Feb. 25, 2003, at the Evergreen Carson City Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born July 26, 1909, to Pearl and Newton Beecher on the family farm in Graham County in Morland Township, Kan., in the same sod house where her mother was born. She was a member of the Beecher family and the 10th generation of the Beechers in America.

As a teenager, she moved with her family to Kansas City, Kan., where she spent most of her adult life.

She married Oscar in 1929, and they were married for more than 50 years.

Mrs. Hataway was very active in many civic, school, religious and social organizations in Kansas City including the State Avenue Baptist Church, Roosevelt PTA, Boy Scouts of America Troop 210 and Order of the Eastern Star.

After her retirement, she also lived in Natchitoches, La., and Grand Junction, Colo., before moving to Nevada in 1994. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carson City.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Louise; brother, Newton Jr.; sisters Olive and Faye; and grandson Mark.

Among her survivors are her sisters Thelma of WaKeeney, Kan., Violet of Hill City, Kan., and Vivian of Fort Collins, Colo.; sons Don of Carson City and Leon of Crockett, Texas; daughters-in-law Donna and Ann; grandchildren Mary Kathleen, Christopher Stafford and Jason Patrick; and great-grandchildren Chloe Virginia and Emma Grace.

In accordance with her wishes, there will be no funeral. She will be buried in Cortez, Colo., with her husband and grandson.
