South Shore man charged with lewdness

STATELINE -- A 67-year-old South Shore maintenance worker was charged with one felony count of lewdness with a child under 14 years old for an incident four years ago.

Arnold Amyle Austin was released from jail on his own recognizance after a Tahoe Township Justice Court appearance Monday.

Authorities arrested Austin last week at the corner of Highway 50 and Elks Point Road in Round Hill.

About two months ago, a South Lake Tahoe police detective was alerted that a school counselor had heard about a student, now a teenager, being molested.

Through interviews, the detective discovered that one of the incidents occurred in Stateline during summer 1999.

Austin is accused of attempting to fondle a then-12-year-old girl. In an interview with a Douglas County sheriff's investigator, Austin, now living in South Lake Tahoe, said the allegations were true, but said it was innocent horseplay, the report stated.

Austin's next court date is Aug. 12 at 1 p.m. at Tahoe Township Justice Court.
