Salt Lake City construction firm apparent low bidder for Carson freeway

Nevada Department of Transportation named a Salt Lake City construction company as the apparent low bidder Thursday for the Carson City freeway project that would connect bridges over Arrowhead Drive, Northgate Lane, College Parkway and Emerson Drive.

AMES Construction submitted a bid for $68.9 million, a price more than $10 million below the original engineering estimate. There were five other bids.

"This is a very good bid," said NDOT spokesman Scott Magruder. "We're excited and very pleased with the way the bids came out."

NDOT will review all bids for accuracy and to check numbers in the next few weeks before officially awarding a contract in August, Magruder said.

Other companies submitting bids for the project included Frehner, Granite Construction in conjunction with Q&D Construction, Road and Highway Builders, Kiewit Western Co. and Las Vegas Paving Corp.

If all goes as planned, the project is expected to begin by October, Magruder said.

"We're ready to start," Magruder said.

The project will create the northern halfway of the freeway project from Lakeview Hill to Highway 50. It will take about three years to build. A southern portion from Highway 50 to a southern interchange of highways 50 and 395 would follow.
