Casino Fandango beats deadline for 100-room rule

An ordinance enacted by Carson City supervisors last year requiring 100 hotel rooms for businesses with more than 15 slot machines will not affect Casino Fandango, Carson City's newest gaming establishment.

"The way the ordinance is written, we had to apply for our licenses by Aug. 1 of last year and open our business by Aug. 1 of this year," said Peter Wilday, architect on the project. "That's not to say we wouldn't consider hotel rooms in the future, but right now we're concentrating on developing a casino for locals."

Final approval of the casino's gaming license came last week and it were issued a full license Tuesday. At 3800 S. Carson St., the casino opened Tuesday evening.

Supervisor Robin Williamson said other businesses, like Bodine's in south Carson City, took advantage of the grace period and applied for an unrestricted license before the deadline.

The Lucky Spur is also exempted from the ordinance because the building was a casino historically.

"I was a proponent of this measure and I know the ordinance meant investors had to put this development on the fast track," Williamson said. "I'm delighted we found a good use for the Supply One building."

Future building plans include up to 600 slot machines, a full 24-hour coffee shop, a themed buffet, a steak house and additional parking just south of the building.
