A Fernley man was killed early Sunday in a single-vehicle accident on U.S. 95 about five miles south of Fernley. He was the only person in the car at the time.
It appears the man fell asleep behind the wheel, drifted off the road, woke up and over corrected, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Scott Trimming. He said the tire tracks go gradually off the road and then into the dirt where the car flipped.
The accident occurred at about 12:30 a.m.
According to police reports, the man was northbound when his blue Nissan Sentra drifted off the east road edge. It ended up about 35 feet down a 55-degree embankment in the sagebrush, according to Trooper Trimming.
The man was wearing a seat belt but was partially ejected from the vehicle as it rolled, police reports state.
The Highway Patrol has identified the man but his name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident, according to Trooper Trimming.
