Silver Scholars shine at Carson's schools

Pioneer High School juniors Claudia Alvarado, Laura Dobson, Erin Marshall and Shayleena Olson have been given Silver Scholar Awards.

The University of Nevada, Reno Alumni Association presents the award to the top 10 percent of high school juniors across Nevada.

Family and friends all gathered to honor the students on Wednesday. Pioneer High School sophomores also attended the ceremony, which included guest speakers Secretary of State Dean Heller and Wendy Damonte, Channel 2 News anchor woman and UNR Alumni member.

Mike Watty, associate superintendent of education, and Superintendent Mary Pierczynski also came to show their support to the students.

Katie Elliot, UNR Alumni Association member, presented each student with a Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and an official Silver Scholar certificate.
