Sen. Randolph Townsend, R-Reno, introduced legislation Monday that would pay to educate and retrain Nevada Highway Patrol troopers who have been disabled in the line of duty.
SB302 was referred to the Senate Finance Committee for study.
The legislation requires the highway patrol to pay 100 percent of any tuition charges, half of all registration and lab fees, and half of books and course materials for classes in the University and Community College System of Nevada.
The support would be available for any NHP trooper injured in the line of duty and eligible for disability retirement.
The legislation exempts those payments from being counted against any other payments, benefits or retirement money paid to the officer.
There was no fiscal note attached to the legislation indicating how much it might cost the state.
