CBS to broadcast Tahoe event

An adventure race at Lake Tahoe this autumn will be broadcast on CBS in January, providing yet another boost to the area's efforts to position itself as "America's Adventure Place." The Subaru Primal Quest will be broadcast after CBS coverage of a NFL playoff game, said Gordon Wright, a spokesman for the event.

Organizers of the event have been working since January to win over CBS.

"We'll get a tremendous amount of exposure," said Wright.

"More important, the sport of adventure racing will get a tremendous amount of exposure."

In adventure racing, four members teams race together night and day over 400 miles of running, biking, lake paddling, white-water paddling, caving and rock climbing.

The race is a non-stop 24-hour endurance event; leading teams usually log no more than two hours of sleep per night during the six- to 10-day race.

The CBS presentation will mark the first time expedition adventure racing has been telecast on a broadcast network.

The sport dates from 1989.

The Subaru Primal Quest is scheduled Sept.

4-15 at Lake Tahoe.

The competition has drawn entries from Columbia, Australia, Ireland, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica, Norway, Sweden, Canada, Poland, France, Switzerland and New Zealand, said race director Dan Barger.

They'll be competing for a $250,000 purse.
