Vegas lobbyist suspected of drunken driving

A Las Vegas lobbyist was arrested in Carson City on suspicion of driving drunk while behind the wheel of a Las Vegas city vehicle.

Kami Dempsey, 27, was stopped by a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper who allegedly noticed she was speeding 10 miles over the posted 25 mph on Carson Street about 11 p.m. Thursday night.

When the trooper tried to catch up, he reported, Dempsey changed lanes and abruptly turned onto Fifth Street. He stopped the car at Carson and Seventh streets, the report states.

"Dempsey denied drinking, but later admitted to drinking two martinis," Trooper Christopher Smithen said in his report. He also noted he could allegedly "smell a strong odor of alcohol" coming from the vehicle.

Dempsey allegedly failed the field sobriety test and was booked into the Carson City Jail. She bailed out Friday.

The former goverment affairs director for the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce was hired by Las Vegas in the spring of 2002.
