120 YEARS AGO

This is Queen Victoria's birthday. During the lifetime of our late public-spirited citizen George D. Friday, that anniversary was always gloriously celebrated in Carson by all subjects of her majesty. But since his death, our British friends have permitted the day to pass unnoticed.

100 YEARS AGO

The cycle whirl that Jack Wing and others have been making is finished, and the boys have had a turn or so around the dizzy game. It is one of the most difficult and astounding feats yet produced on a bicycle. From the amount of practice it takes, it appears no greenhorn or only a party who will risk his neck will take the chance.

70 YEARS AGO

Mrs. M.M. Reading, one of Carson's pioneer residents, celebrated her 84th birthday at the home of her son, Will Reading. During the boom days of Bodie, Mrs. Reading was the seventh white woman to settle in that district.

50 YEARS AGO

William L. (Bill) Casinella, manager of the First National Bank of Nevada since 1941, has been appointed assistant vice president of the First and Virginia branch in Reno. He began his career more than 35 years ago with the Bank of Sparks.

20 YEARS AGO

Bill Ruff, event chairman for the International Chili Society, claimed the first South Lake Tahoe Cookoff Championship, sponsored by Del Webb's Sahara Tahoe, a success. It was won by a branch manager for a plumbing contractor, Bob Woosley, and his "Verdi Chili Gang."

10 YEARS AGO

Graveside service of Charles Robert Samuels of Dayton. Before moving there, he lived in Carson City and was the owner and operator of M-C Reel Co. Inc. in Mound House. He also operated heavy equipment. Among his survivors are his wife, Donna; sons Michael and Christopher of Dayton; and daughter Deborah Jones of Riverside, Calif.
