A report of a bomb at Dayton High School caused the evacuation of its 620 students and shut down the school for the day, authorities said Thursday. No bomb was found.
The hoax came to dispatchers in Reno about 9:50 a.m. The dispatchers then contacted Lyon County, said Lt. Jeroen Wynands of the Lyon County Sheriff's Department.
Students were in their third-period classes when a fire alarm was activated by school administrators. Students evacuated to the football field about 10 a.m. and were sent home 20 minutes later, Wynands said.
A search of the building came up empty, he said.
"We went through the rooms, checked trash cans, opened lockers and cabinets and found nothing," said Sgt. Jim Cupp.
An investigation into who made the call is under way. The caller could be charged with a felony, Wynands said.
"We have some information on who might be responsible," he said, declining further comment on the investigation.
Angela Sinor, 16, a junior, said she considered the situation an advantage.
"We get the whole day off," she said. "It's awesome."
School will resume at 7:30 a.m. today.
