A memorial service for James Gardner Miller, 76, a Silver Springs resident for the past 14 years, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Pit Stop Bar, 4280 Highway 50 E., Silver Springs.
Mr. Miller died April 11, 2004, at home after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was born June 25, 1927, in Rigby, Idaho. He was raised in Montana and lived in Washington and Utah before settling in Nevada in 1980.
He was well-known in the horse world and worked as a jockey, trainer, farrier and breeder. He co-authored a book on corrective horseshoeing. He trained many race horses, polo ponies and privately owned horses. In recent years, he raised paint horses and worked cattle. He cherished the traditions of the West.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia; son Sidney; six brothers and a sister.
Among his survivors are his partner of 16 years, Linda Hansen; son and daughter-in-law Matthew and Judy of San Francisco; son Michael of Des Moines, Wash.; grandsons Randolph and Jackson; sisters Ruth Kurtz and Karyn Staedler; and many nieces and nephews.
