'Romeo and Juliet' a benefit for art center

If you wear mascara, make it waterproof and get out your handkerchiefs: One of history's most tragic love stories is coming to Carson City.

The Brewery Arts Center will present "Romeo and Juliet" this month to raise funds for continuing programs at the Carson Arts Center, including its children's theater program, the BAC Stage Kids.

Directed by Christopher James and produced by Pat Josten, "Romeo and Juliet" tells a story of star-crossed lovers and the unhappy fate that befell them after a long and bitter feud between their families.

The play contains some of William Shakespeare's most beautiful and lyrical love poetry.

"The director approached me with the idea, and we both thought this would be a nice production for summertime," Josten said. "Proceeds will benefit the kids' productions, but the cast is adult."

The cast and crew of one of Shakespeare's most popular plays all come from Carson City, Carson Valley, Lake Tahoe, Reno/Sparks and other nearby locales.

The BAC Stage Kids program exposes kids to all aspects of play production by putting them in charge of everything from lighting and sound to casting and makeup.

Josten said she couldn't think of a better excuse to put on the heart-wrenching Shakespeare classic.

"('Romeo and Juliet') is perhaps the finest celebration of the joys of young love ever written," she said.

Show dates are 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Aug. 27 and 28 and at 2 p.m. Sunday and Aug. 29.

Ticket prices are $15 for general admission and $12 for art center members, students and seniors.

A special "student rush" price of $5 will be offered five minutes before the doors close for any available seats. Students must have a valid school identification card.
