Migrants flock to area from all over country

Californians account for the largest number of people moving into northern Nevada, but the Golden State also continues to exert a powerful draw pulling families away from the region.

A study by United Van Lines finds that household shipments from California were by far the most common into northern Nevada during 2003.

Of the 586 United Van Lines shipments into Washoe County, 186 originated in California.

In Carson City, 94 out of 363 shipments came from California.

Other states accounting for significant numbers of shipments into Washoe County were Texas with 37 shipments, Florida with 25, Virginia and Montana with 17 each and Washington with 16.

In Carson City, leading states for inbound shipments included Arizona with eight and Maryland with six.

California also accounted for a large portion of the families moving away from the region, the United Van Lines study found.

In Washoe County, 94 of 363 outbound shipments were headed for California.

In Carson City, six of 38 shipments headed for the Golden State.

Other states drawing residents from Washoe County included Arizona (23 shipments),Texas (22 shipments) and Washington (20 shipments).

In Carson City, only North Carolina with five shipments ranked close to the California numbers.

St.

Louis-based United Van Lines has tracked shipment patterns since 1977, and Executive Vice President Brian Paluch said the figures have proven to be a good barometer of migration trends in the United States.

Nevada last year led the nation in new arrivals.

Of all the United Van Lines shipments handled in the state, more than 66 percent were new arrivals.

Only 34 percent were shipments for people leaving Nevada.
