Joseph Ernest 'Joe' Ward

Joseph Ernest "Joe" Ward, 83, a Carson City-Tahoe area resident for the past 25 years, died Jan. 2, 2004, at Carson-Tahoe Hospital. He was born Dec. 28, 1920, in Goldendale, Wash., to William Ernest and Della Ward.

He attended high school in Kelso, Wash.

He married Lucy on Dec. 19, 1963, in Burley, Idaho. Before moving to this area, he lived in Burlington, Wash.

Mr. Ward worked for the Astoria Fire Department in Astoria, Ore., for 25 years and was assistant fire chief. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 707 for 50 years, the Shriners for 35 years and a life member of the Elks. He loved to cook and bake, his rose garden and playing golf.

Among his survivors are his wife Lucy of 40 years and son and daughter-in-law Ken and Sue, all of Carson City; son and daughter-in-law Gary and Sue of Dayton; stepdaughter and her husband, Connie Sue and Jim Akin of Keystone, Neb.; sister, Nadean Gunderson of Longview, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Society.

At his request, no service will be held.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
