Doctor helping students who need physical exams to play sports

Carson City physician Amy Sobel is stepping up to the plate to assist student athletes.

Sobel, of Capital Medical Associates, will host the Sports Physical Clinic to help students complete their required physical examinations before beginning fall sports.

"Sports physicals are a crucial tool for evaluating the safety and readiness for students who intend to participate in sports," she said. "The exam identifies illnesses or conditions that could put a student at risk and looks for risk factors in the students physical-health history."

All students who wish to participate in junior high or high school sports are required to have a physical exam and file sports reports with the school district.

Sobel will review the students' medical history and measure their height, weight and blood pressure. She will refer students for any follow-up treatment or immunizations as needed.

She said she will also address the student's condition beyond the anticipated physical stresses.

"As youth sports have become more competitive, we are seeing more and more injuries in both males and females and more of a drive in the young athletes to perform better," she said. "Sports physicals give doctors and patients the opportunity to discuss these issues and to prepare for a safe and successful sports season."

The Sports Physical Clinic is open to for all students more than 8 years old on Aug. 2, 5 and 6. Cost is $50 at the time of service. To make an appointment, call 887-8900.

Carson High School will also host an evening of free physicals at 5 p.m. Aug. 9 in the school locker rooms.

No appointment is necessary, but students should pick up their athletic packets after the middle of this month in any of the high school offices.

All high school athletes and Naval Junior ROTC members must get physicals prior to participation.

They must also obtain clearance from the athletic office and maintain academic eligibility.

Students must also purchase a student body card.
