Carson City and local gun clubs are considering moving area facilities to a central location.
The city recently identified the Carson Rifle and Pistol Range property near the landfill as a prime location for a reclaimed-water storage reservoir.
A move would allow the private Capitol City Gun Club on Arrowhead Drive to expand its operations.
"We're landlocked," said Bob Blackwood, club president. "We would be able to expand and offer more different kinds of shooting games. You don't really want to have a gun club in the middle of town."
The club offers shotgun sports, including trap, skeet and sporting clays. Started in 1943, it moved to its current location in the mid-1970s.
City staff is exploring areas where the club, the city's rifle and pistol club and the Clear Creek Bowmen operations can build. It might be on public Bureau of Land Management land through a lease, said Parks and Recreation Department Acting Director Scott Fahrenbruch.
The parks commission is expected to consider the location in the next few months, he said.
"The (commission) was very receptive to the idea of having all shooting sports in the same facility, but they wanted to get a little more information on what potential sites were available," Fahrenbruch said.
