Carson High School drama students will model 60 years of prom fashions tonight in a show called "Rocking Through the Ages." Complete with period music and dance, the event will raise funds for Carson Performing Arts, which includes the school's drama, choir and band departments.
"We pulled some vintage clothes from the costume room at the school," said student Luci Zuend. She helped size the models and select the clothing. "I think it's going to be a really fun show."
Male and female models will strut their stuff on a runway in Senator Square at the school for the first-time event.
All of the girls and some of the guys got "air brush" tanning from Spear Me, a Winnie Lane hair studio and piercing shop. Some of the models will also be getting non-permanent, air-brushed tattoos.
The show, lasting about an hour and 45 minutes, will be broken up with several entertaining performances. Small excerpts from the school's upcoming show, "Guys and Dolls" - which opens March 19 - will be done between each era of fashions, from 1944 through today. Other song-and- dance numbers will be performed, including a swing-dance routine.
Dresses are being donated for use by Maurice's Fashions and Sasha's City Boutique. The tuxedos are coming from Tux Town.
The idea for the show came from Karen Chandler, the school's drama coach. Her own prom dress from the 1970s will be shown. Her students have been working on the project for several months.
The event is open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
