Forum disbands, donates funds to NPEF

It's rare to find a business organization that not only declares itself "out of business because its job is done," much less decides to give its left over collected dues to a nonprofit organization.

That's exactly what the Forum for a Common Agenda did when it recently contributed $40,000 to the Nevada Public Education Foundation to support educational improvement and innovation in Nevada.

The Forum required the foundation to match that donation in order to leverage the total amount of funding into $80,000.

Matching donors included International Game Technology, Nevada Power, Ron and Susan Krump, and the Mandalay Resort Group.

The Forum for a Common Agenda was a business and community leadership organization formed in the 1980s to be a catalyst for improving the quality of life and business in the Truckee Meadows.

One of its first projects was the "Green Book," a community-wide action plan identifying goals for improving education, tourism, health and human services, public sector infrastructure and the environment.

The Forum also took leadership role on the "One Region" community-wide planning program.

"The Forum is proud to be able to support an outstanding, results-oriented organization such as the Nevada Public Education Foundation," said Jim Devolld, chairperson of the board of the Forum.

"A high-performance public education system contributes to our community's economics and quality of living, the retention of our talent pool and the success of the region's business."

The NPEF, founded in 1991, is a statewide organization established to assist, support and enhance public education programs in Nevada.

The organization works to recognize exceptional teachers, students and public schools and improve learning opportunities for students and teachers in public education in Nevada.

The group also solicits and manages gifts, grants, and bequests, and monitors and evaluates funded educational programs in the state.

The group does not fund programs that should be funded by local, state or federal resources.

Members of the Forum were polled to determine a nonprofit organization to receive the unused dues.

The NPEF was chosen because of its direct aid to further one of the Forum's original priorities -- support of the public education system.
