After four Carson City students read their winning essays to school board trustees Tuesday night, they will be awarded $250 savings bonds.
Adam Peterson of Seeliger Elementary School, Rebecca Doyle of St. Teresa of Avila, Rebecca Gansberg of Bethlehem Lutheran and Nick Brothers of Carson High won the American Essay contest sponsored by school board trustees.
The essay topic was what the Statue of Liberty means to Americans and the world. Typically, one winner at the elementary, middle and high school grades are picked, but Adam and Rebecca tied this year for the elementary school position.
The board meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Sierra Room of the community center at 851 E. William St.
Board members will also:
n Hear from Carson High School Principal Fred Perdomo and special-education teacher Shawn Schneider about the Kurzweil 3000 program at the school. The computer software allows textbooks to be scanned and read aloud to students with learning difficulties.
n Review the process for changing the school year schedule for elementary schools to year-round.
n Hear from Superintendent Mary Pierczynski about the district's discipline plan.
n Listen to a report about the district's independent audit for fiscal year 2004.
