We have our tiaras ready for parade

Happy Columbus Day for those of you who remember when it used to be celebrated on the 12th .. yessir, good ol' Chris stepped upon our shores in 1492, and was credited with discovering this country, aside from the fact that Leif Ericson got here first, or that it was named for Amerigo Vespucci ....

Oh, well ... maybe if he had a better PR man, we'd be Columbia ... and Columbia'd be America ... or if Leif had a PR man at all, it'd be Ericsonia ... (we obviously have too much time on our hands) ...

Many thanks to Bill Burnaugh of Capitol City Loans (voted No.1 in the Nevada Appeal's "Reader's Choice" list for the second straight year) for giving us two lovely tiaras to wear in the Nevada Day parade ... with our tiaras, gloves and faux-fur coats, we should look quite ducky. Look for us on the Boys & Girls Club float ... we'll be doing our best "queen wave" for you ...

Are you still getting calls from telemarketers? We are ... Carolyn got one the other day for a cause that she apparently gave to in the past (that's still legal), and when she asked to be taken off their list, the "lady" with the New York accent got very pushy ... don't think they'll call again, though ... she emulated Nancy Reagan and just said, "No."

And even though they call with seemingly worthwhile causes, i.e., veterans, firemen, police, etc., what goes to those causes is less than 50 percent ... most goes to "administrative fees," i.e., the callers themselves ... bah humbug ...

Our deepest condolences go out to the Polichio family on the death of their son and brother, Frank, and to the Conway family on the death of Norma's father, Charles Ridgeway. Perhaps there is comfort in the words of Joyce Jillson, the syndicated astrologist who passed away on Oct. 1 at the age of 58 ... she recently wrote, "With every meeting, an eventual parting is inevitable. Remember this, and you will never take it personally when a situation comes to an end. A parting of the ways is the end of one cycle and the beginning of the next." So, may your next cycle be joyous and filled with love and wonderful memories ...

We had a delicious time speaking at St. Paul's Lutheran Family's Lee Group ... they told us it stood for "Lutheran Eager Eaters," since the food was so good. The ever lovely Emma Wertz invited us, knowing that we'd "speak for food," and we had a great time ... pity, nobody started a food fight or anything ...

If you drive down Mountain Street this month, you'll see a host of great Halloween decorations ... but why is it that the stores are putting up Christmas stuff already? Yeah, we know it's the $$$ ... but it sure is tacky ... too bad we can't enjoy Halloween and Thanksgiving first, then gear up for Christmas ...

And speaking of Halloween ... Seeliger School had a great Pumpkin Patch this year ... complete with pumpkins, food and face painting ... we're looking forward to trick or treat, Oct. 31st ... Booooooo ...

Good news: Kathy Wandel won a breakfast with us at the Brewery Arts Center beer tasting ... we can hardly wait (and, no, we won't be starving until that happens ... ha); and thanks to Linda Raible for all the good thoughts; also, the Station Grille is starting Sunday brunch this Sunday from 9-1 ... just what we need ... another place to nosh; and the Nevada State Railroad Museum will be steamed up on the same day ... so go eat, then take a ride on the steam train ... fun, fun, fun ...

Contrary to what you've heard, Dr. Rex Baggett is not "just" starting his service at FISH's Ross Clinic ... he's been there (as has Maizie) for the past six years ... but they will miss the "morning gang" tremendously (that's Dr. King, Carol Reed-Anderson et al) ...

A lady we met told us her tale of unemployment ... a while back she was looking for a job and saw a manager's position with a 246 prefix on the telephone listing. Thinking it might be near her home, she called and got the Kit Kat Ranch ... seems they needed someone to manage the place, train the girls, and run the bar. "Hmmm," she thought, "my managerial and training skills are good for something ... but, gosh, I'd have to learn to tend bar." Shucks ... she didn't take the job ...

Don't forget to take in "Clue, The Musical" at the Brewery Arts Center this weekend ... call 883-1976 for information ... it's based on the board game and is fun and "mysterious" ...

And lastly, happy birthday to Ryan Jesse (he'll be 17 on Monday) and Father Jerry (he will be ... hmmmm ... does the counter go that high? ... oh, yes ... 39 and counting ... again ... stand back ... lightning is about to strike us) ... "and many mooooore ... "
