They are calling the Boston Red Sox's victory over the New York Yankees the greatest comeback in playoff history - because it was. No team has been up three games to none and lost four in a row!
The Red Sox's season was seemingly over after Saturday's 19-8 loss, then they rallied to become the first team in baseball history to trail 0-3 and win a best-of-seven series. It's also the first time since the final day of 1904 that Boston has beaten the Yankees in a winner-take-all game.
I've seen the word "miracle" used in a number of sports reports. They were facing seemingly impossible odds in facing a very good opponent, down by three, and the fact that it had never been done before.
I started watching the series on Saturday while were visiting our son Joel and his wife, Jenny, in Spokane. The Red Sox were facing the seemingly impossible feat of winning four-straight games.
I began pulling for the Sox because I like to root for underdogs, and I don't especially like the Yanks. When playing in Boston, there was a common sign being held up in the stands. It read "Believe."
"Believe." Believe the impossible can happen. And it did.
As "believers" and followers of Jesus Christ, we too are encouraged to "believe." In fact, Jesus said, "If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes." (Mark 9:23)
It doesn't matter if it has never happened before. With God, all things are possible. One of my favorite Scripture/songs comes from the prophet Jeremiah:
"Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You." (Jer. 32:17)
There is nothing too hard for Him. Whatever you are facing ... believe ... and pray to the God who made the heavens ... and you might just find yourself in the midst of a miracle.
