Spanish guitar master plays the Station

If you've been looking for a Bobby Short-type of early evening entertainment, where the music is sophisticated, swinging and tasteful, give George Henepen a listen at the Carson Station on Carson Street some Friday starting at 6 p.m.

Henepen, a portly, balding and bearded man with a happy smile plastered across his mug, is a master of the Spanish guitar, where all right hand five fingers take part. It's an art beyond the skills of almost all rock guitarists.

At Comma Coffee, the fun is in the dance as it's World Dance Friday kicking off (terrible pun) with signups at 7:30 p.m. Go to dance or just to watch until 10 p.m. On Saturday from 7 p.m. to who-knows-when, the Drum Circle bangs away. Weather permitting, this will be in the Comma Courtyard.

Promoter Zack Denson continues his rock-a-thon at Daddy Dick's Tavern at 1305 S. Carson St. Sunday. Music starts at 8 p.m. with the Recent Apostles and False Idols playing. It's $3 at the door, and you've got to be 21. Denson says he plans to make this a regular Sunday event. Stay tuned.

Aviation buffs take note: This is the weekend of the Reno Air Races at Stead Airport through Sunday. An event not to be missed if you're a fan of those World War II Mustangs and P-47 Thunderbolts. Crowds, sure, but what fun! See www.airrace.org for the schedule.

Two of the world's funniest men, Tim Conway and Harvey Korman, play the Silver Legacy on Friday and Saturday. They are what made "The Carol Burnett Show" such a pleasure to watch, not that Burnett was a bore. Conway is the master of the slow burn, and Korman the master of flights of ego.

On Saturday the Tahoe Rim Trail Association is holding its annual Hike-A-Thon. Call for time, sponsorship and location, (775) 298-0232. This is a fund-raiser for the Rim folks, and if my knee was in better shape I'd be there. The Rim Trail is a magnificent achievement; now we've got to help keep the trails in shape.

CDs that have crossed the entertainment desk recently:

-- California Guitar Trio's "Whitewater," InsideOutMusic: Very nice strumming of originals. I liked "Red Iguana." Not a rock beat in sight, however.

-- Asia's "Silent Nation": If on-the-beat, socking drums are your taste, this might be for you. As in all rock, subtlety is not available here. "Gone Too Far" really sets the pace and sound level.
