Director of Brewery Arts Center resigns after two-years at helm

Phil Caterino is stepping down as executive director of the Brewery Arts Center, Susan Crowell said Friday.

Crowell, president of the art center's board of directors, said Caterino is leaving to work with the Dreyfus Foundation as project director for the Building Bridges project. He will stay at the arts center through Friday to assist in a smooth transition.

"The Brewery Arts Center is a cultural gem." Caterino said. "It has been a privilege to participate in the development of this important community resource. While I will be moving on to new endeavors, the BAC will always be close to my heart."

Caterino took over as director nearly two years ago and helped with the acquisition of the Performance Hall its subsequent renovation from a Catholic Church to a performing arts center.

"Phil has been a tremendous asset to the Brewery Arts Center," Crowell said. "Through his vision and guidance, the BAC is on the verge of becoming a first-class cultural center for Carson City and the surrounding communities. He will be missed and we wish him well."

Since 1976, the Brewery Arts Center has been dedicated to historic preservation and cultural programming in Nevada. The two-block cultural campus now has two historically important Nevada landmarks as bookends.

The arts center has completed the initial rehabilitation of the Carson Brewing Co. building and turned this two-story building into a showcase for visual art and a ballroom for varied community uses.

It is in the process of renovating the seating in the Performance Hall to enhance its use in presenting acoustically superb performances. A capital campaign is being considered to raise funds to complete the renovation and construction of a new and expanded cultural arts venue.

The board has developed a transition plan to ensure that the BAC continues with its mission while it searches for a new executive director.
