Performing arts camp beginning

"Get in the Act" presents Performing Arts Camps for Kids at the Children's Museum.

This one-week camp introduces campers to the magical world of the performing arts through dance, acting, singing and visual art, culminating with a performance.

Small camp sizes allow each student the opportunity to expand and build his or her creative talents. Camp is 9:30 a.m.-noon Monday through Friday for ages 3-6 years. Camp fee is $130.

Bring your dance for open floor night

Dancers are needed for World Dance Open Floor Night on Aug. 19 at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson St.

This is an invitation to share your dance from Brazil or Egypt or India or Hawaii or wherever.

Bring your music on cassette tape or CD. Maximum performance time is 10 minutes.

Sign-ups for dancers start at 7 p.m. and performances start at 8 p.m. The event is free and all ages are welcome.

Nevada AIDS Foundation seeks auction donations

Commemorating its 20th year in Northern Nevada and in recognition of the month of October as AIDS Awareness Month, Nevada AIDS Foundation will hold its First Annual Online Auction hosted by eBay Oct. 17-23.

The goal is to raise funds to provide housing assistance, support and advocacy for those living with HIV/AIDS and their families and friends; and to work toward disease prevention through education, outreach and community awareness.

The regular monthly meeting of the Douglas County Senior Services Advisory Council will be at 8 a.m. Monday at the Douglas County Senior Center. The public is welcome.

Come celebrate Smokey's birthday

Smokey Bear will make a special appearance at the Douglas County Public Library in Minden at 6:45 p.m. Monday to celebrate his birthday. Smokey Bear was born Aug. 9, 1944. People all over the world recognize Smokey Bear and his message "Only you can prevent forest fires."

Carol Rapacz from the Douglas County Public Library will tell the story of Smokey and how he came to be the animal symbol for fire safety. Stacy Saucedo from the U.S. Forest Service will talk about how to use fire and matches safely.

To celebrate Smokey's birthday we will make homemade ice-cream-in-a-can.

Children should bring their own toppings such as chocolate sauce, cherries and whipped cream. Please bring small clear coffee can lids (from 13-ounce coffee cans). Raley's and the library will furnish other supplies.

Children must register by Monday morning to attend this program.
