Frances Elizabeth Smith English

A memorial service for Frances Elizabeth Smith English, 88, a Nevada native, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Walton's Sierra Chapel, 875 W. Second St., in Reno.

Mrs. English died March 1, 2005, in Reno.

She was born June 11, 1916, in the Mogul power station near Verdi to Ralph T. and Bessie Smith. Her father operated a power plant on the Truckee River.

She attended Reno schools and the University of Nevada.

At the university, she lettered on the swimming team and was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority.

She graduated in 1938 and remained active for years in the sorority.

She married Harry English in 1945.

Mrs. English taught for a year in Eureka. She then changed careers and worked as a bookkeeper for Saviers Paint Store and other businesses. She was active in Masonic organizations in Reno. She served as Worthy Matron of Adah Chapter No. 4, Order of Eastern Star and as Queen of Ammon-Ra Temple 56, Daughters of the Nile. She traveled the world with her friends and visited six of the seven continents.

Among her survivors are her husband of 59 years; children Carol of Carson City and Harry of Reno; and grandchildren Paul and Mark Ceccarelli of Carson City and Christopher, Ashley and Alysha English of Reno.
