Cal Ave merchants to take to the streets

Artists of all stripes will take to the streets this summer at the Cal Ave Street Market, a promotion by the 20 members of the Cal Ave Merchants Association.

About 25 venders both association members and others will set up in outdoor tents each Saturday on Hill Street, between Liberty and California to display jewelry, flowers and clothing. The event runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. from June 10 to July 22.

Blue Plate owner Valerie Curtis is coordinating the market.

The association, now over a year old, has hosted two annual holiday stroll promotions, held two weeks before Christmas. The turnout this year was four times that of last year, says Mark Curtis, board member.

The Cal Ave Merchants Association was formed, says Curtis, when the business owners disagreed with some directions suggested by the City of Reno.

"Our objective is to market the street," says Curtis. To date, he adds, the group has accomplished two things easing parking restrictions and redrawing the redevelopment district lines to include all of California Avenue.
