Landscape firms going green

Signature Landscapes and Reno Lawn & Landscape have started construction on a 9,800-square-foot office building in southeast Reno.

The $6.5 million project at 3705 Barron Way, east of Longley Lane and south of McCarran Boulevard, also will include an adjacent 8,400-square-foot shop.

The companies are co-owned by Rick Clark, Lebo and Merrill Newman, and Justin Trimble.

GenSeven Development & Construction of Reno is the general contractor on the project. Engineering is by Ferrari Shields & Associates of Reno.

The design by Aloiau Architecture is designed with environmentally friendly features. The building's placement will take advantage of passive heating and cooling, and its masonry walls are designed to be energy efficient.

Skylights will provide natural light, and windows can be opened for ventilation, said Lebo Newman. He said the company will use low-emission materials, and the owners hope to find recycled flooring materials.

A rooftop garden, meanwhile, will include a recirculating water fall off the building's front into a water feature below. Demonstration gardens around the property will show clients the ways that low-water-use landscaping can be used. The gardens also will be used as training stations for the Nevada Landscape Association's Certified Landscape Technician Program.

The landscaping, Newman said, will use Bio-Swales, landscaped channels that help drain and treat the runoff during storms.
