Survey: Regional economy still weak

The economy in the Sierra region remains poor or very poor, say 62 percent of the 689 business owners and managers who responded to a mid-year survey by the Center for Regional Studies in the University of Nevada, Reno College of Business.

Less than a quarter of them expect improvement by year-end.

Six months ago, about 65 percent of survey respondents said the economy was in bad shape.

Giving more optimistic marks to current conditions were executives in retail, education and healthcare. More than 55 percent of them said the economy is at least fair. Lower marks came from executives in construction, finance, insurance and real estate.

Among all participants in the survey, half said the economy has improved or held, even compared with a year ago.

About 70 percent of the survey responses came from Washoe County. The survey was conducted in July and early August.
