Mine contractor plans move of HQ to Reno from Arizona

Gold Canyon Mining and Construction decided to move its corporate headquarters from Arizona to Reno to be closer to its Nevada mining clients, a company executive says.

Kerry Bjornson, chief executive of Gold Canyon Mining and Construction, says the move also helps Gold Canyon establish a more significant presence in a worldwide mining market.

Gold Canyon recently leased 3,672-square feet of office space at 9790 Gateway Drive. The company expects to move in by Nov. 1 and be fully operational by January.

Gold Canyon has current working relationships with most of the major mine sites in Nevada, Bjornson says. The company will maintain an office in Arizona, and it also has offices in Elko and Fairbanks, Alaska.

"We have been doing a lot of work in Nevada and hadn't establish the type of presence we wanted, and it really makes a lot of sense from a business standpoint. We have a lot of clients here and do a lot of business in Nevada. This move allows us much easier access to the mining communities in Nevada."

Bjornson says about half the company's workforce will transfer from offices in Apache Junction, a suburb of Mesa.

The company expects to have about 15 people working in its Reno office, primarily in engineering, accounts payable, human resources and management. Gold Canyon expects to hire up to eight positions locally. The company's total seasonal workforce is about 250 employees.

Taxes and transportation also factored into the decision to relocate.

"The transportation aspect is very good for us," Bjornson says. "It makes more sense Reno has an international airport. We also have opportunities in Canada, and there is easy access from Reno to Vancouver and Northern Canada. And the tax situation for our employees is very favorable."
