Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels: Silver to some good economic news

The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: Some good economic news came in last week, as taxable sales in Nevada rose 6.6 percent in January, bolstered by strong gains in bar and restaurant sales and accommodations - key indicators of the state's tourism market.

In Carson City, sales were up 9.7 percent. It was the seventh straight month of positive sales gains.

Increases in taxable sales are a good thing as it softens the budget hole for the upcoming biennium. The state's Economic Forum is slated to meet May 2 to make final projections for lawmakers.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the news that more than 200 jobs are coming to the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center. Toys R Us and GSI Commerce have plans to open distribution centers at TRIC this year. Schluter Systems also is currently constructing its facility in the industrial park.

GSI, which was just acquired by eBay, plans to open its facility in August and is planning on investing more than $6 million in equipment and improvements in its new location.

"NNDA and the county are very excited to welcome and support three companies that will have the potential of collectively creating more than 200 jobs in the next several months with possibly over 500 seasonal positions later in the year," said Pat Whitten, Storey County manager.

New, businesses moving to the state will only help the Silver State get out of this recession.
