Friends of the Library donate $50,000 to finish Radio Frequency Identification system

The Friends of the Carson City Library have contributed an additional $50,000 check to the Carson City Library for implementation of Phase II of the Radio Frequency Identification system. The completion of Phase I involved a huge commitment by library volunteers, friends, Carson City Facilities Maintenance Division city staff, and library personnel. Phase I included the placement of RFID tags in the entire library collection followed by encoding of each item. This system enabled library patrons to check out multiple items on their own.

Phase II of the RFID system includes the purchase of an automated materials handling machine which will facilitate the check-in of multiple items simultaneously. The $50,000 gift from the Friends amounts to average annual proceeds raised by volunteers during booksales and sales from Browsers Corner-the used bookstore located just inside the library entrance.

"The Friends and the staff of the library work hard to serve the community better every day, and I am proud of what we do together," said William Crowell, president of the Friends of the Library.
