Providence will do better with us in the year to come and temper the winds of business to the shorn lambs of stock deals and hard times. The Appeal for the year 1881 will be served without a change in price.

Struck it Rich: Taking the advice of the old spiritualistic woman in Silver City, the Walker Bros struck it rich with a shaft sunk at the spot designated. The excitement is increasing and the old woman still continues to ply a lucrative trade.

70 YEARS AGO

Advertisement: Carson Theatre, "Rangers of Fortune," with Fred MacMurray, Patricia Morison, Albert Dekker, three of the most lovable characters the screen has known!

50 YEARS AGO

Births: Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Martin of Dayton are parents of a girl, born at Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

20 YEARS AGO

State laws kick in: Pay raises include a 16 percent boost, from $77,500 to $90,000 a year for Governor Miller; pay for state treasurer, controller and secretary of state will go up 25 percent from $50,000 to $62,000.

10 YEARS AGO

Sworn in: Carson City supervisors Jon Plank, Richard Staub and Mayor Ray Masayko are sworn in by District Judge Bill Maddox.

• Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
