Nevada: Leaders questioning teacher tenure

CARSON CITY (AP) - The Washoe County School District wants Nevada legislators to require at least three years of teaching before granting tenure.

The Las Vegas Sun says a bill is likely during the upcoming legislative session, which begins Feb. 7.

Washoe Superintendent Heath Morrison says the current law that allows tenure to be granted within the first two years doesn't give enough time to evaluate teachers.

The Washoe district serves Reno.

President of the Nevada State Education System says tenure works because it provides teachers protection from being fired for arbitrary reasons. Bad teachers can still be fired.

Gov. Brian Sandoval has called for an end to teacher tenure altogether, as has Assembly Speaker John Oceguera, D-Las Vegas.
